Every student and young professional requires a custom home office space. The right office space can improve your levels of productivity, effectiveness and ultimately, success. When you are living in an apartment, space is often limited so it can be difficult to set up an office that doesn’t cramp your style. Most Ottawa renters are also concerned about keeping the balance between work and relaxation. This is particularly true for those living in bachelor apartments.

Here are some tips and tricks to create an apartment home office you’ll love:

  • Choose comfortable furniture that ties in to your apartment’s style. This way, when you have guests and you need an extra chair or side table, you can slide these items out from your office for a seamless transition from business to leisure. When it comes to chairs, think comfort. That modern, metal high tech chair may look cutting-edge, but nobody wants to sit on a cold hard surface! Comfortable furniture is warm and inviting.
  • See your ideas come to light. Steer clear of stark fluorescent lighting in your apartment office. Instead, select warm lighting and lamps with soft bulbs to create a relaxed atmosphere. Wherever you can, situate your apartment office near a window to soak up the sun’s positive rays. The right lighting can stimulate your energy and improve mental focus which increases productivity.
  • Add some greenery to your apartment office. Studies have shown that adding just one plant to your office can improve your mood, which in turn, makes you more productive. Plants also increase the level of oxygen in your apartment office space, which can help you feel more awake and alert. Also, plants are nice to look at and can add to the overall décor of your apartment.
  • Not sure where to put the desk in your apartment office? Get creative! You can find many innovative ways to set up a great desk in a small space. There are plenty of cost-effective desks on the market that won’t take away from your monthly rent budget.  Pick up a small desk and place it in an empty corner to fill the space. Stack some shelves on top of your desk to give you a place to organize all of your work stuff. You can also place a small desk inside an unused closet space. This way you can pull up a chair when you need to get down to business and close the door when you’re done.
  • Separate business from leisure. If your apartment office is situated in a shared space, such as a living room, you can use a room divider to create some privacy between the two spots. Choose from a variety of styles to find one that adds to your décor. A room divider can help keep you stay focused and maintain a healthy balance between work and relaxation.
  • Store more, work more! When setting up your apartment office, storage units are your best friend. Choose deep drawer, portable filing units and high shelves to keep your office organized. A clean apartment office, without clutter will appear more spacious.

All in all, it’s not about the size of the space, it’s how effectively you use it. Follow these simple tips and tricks to set up an apartment home office tailored to your lifestyle as a student or young professional.
