School is officially back in session, Ottawa! Most of you are probably having a bit of summertime withdrawal. Gone are the afternoons full of endless free time and the mornings spent sleeping in.

That being said, going back to school doesn’t have to mean giving up everything you enjoy! There are plenty of ways to relish the city while still being productive with your studies. For many of you, heading back to school may mean settling down in a new area—which means there is tons of exploring to do!

Here’s how you can explore Ottawa while still staying on the ball with your schoolwork.

Enjoy the greenery while hitting the books

Summer might be ending, but there are still a few weeks of warm weather left! Rather than going to the campus library, take your books to a nearby park to do your assigned readings. Ottawa is known for it’s beautiful parks and greenery, so take advantage of it while the weather permits!

Grab a bench at the Rideau Canal, where you can enjoy the beautiful views of one of the city’s most famous areas, while soaking in some knowledge for class next week! The Rideau Canal is only a 15-minute bus ride from the University of Ottawa, and a short walk from Elgin Square apartments!

Find a local café

There are a lot of distractions when trying to study at home—Netflix, roommates and a cozy bed to name a few. Try stopping in at a café that’s close to your apartment to get some morning (or evening) studying in. Not only do cafés provide an alternate working environment, they also provide delicious treats and beverages to keep you energized.

Simply Biscotti is only a 10-minute walk from Ridgevew Apartments downtown Ottawa. Every treat is made fresh, every coffee brewed fresh and 7 days a week! What more could a student ask for?

Take a break:

Your studies are important—but it’s also important to remember to take a break every once in awhile! If you’ve been working hard all week, give yourself an afternoon to explore a part of the city you’ve never seen before.

Ottawa has so many landmarks and neighbourhoods to offer: Byward Market, Parliament Hill, Elgin Street and so much more. Make a list of all the things you want to see throughout the city this year, and take some time every few weeks to get out and visit them!

It can be difficult to balance your time when it comes to post-secondary education. School takes a lot of hard work and dedication. For the days when you just can’t find the time to set the books aside, find a way to explore while you work!

Now get out there and discover this beautiful city, Ottawa! And keep studying hard while you do it!
